In a world where the competition is fierce and opportunities aren’t always guaranteed, it’s more important than ever to rely on yourself. While jobs can provide temporary stability, true security comes from knowing how to create value, build connections, and develop a system that supports your goals. That’s where finding and building your tribe comes in—a community of people who trust you, value what you offer, and look to you for solutions.
Here’s how you can get started on this journey toward independence, self-reliance, and financial freedom.
1. The Importance of Self-Reliance
Relying on others to meet your needs can leave you vulnerable. What happens if the system you depend on—whether it’s a job, a scholarship, or financial support—suddenly falls through? That’s why self-reliance is so powerful. It puts the control in your hands, allowing you to take initiative, make decisions, and create opportunities for yourself.
Being self-reliant doesn’t mean doing everything alone. It means recognizing your value, taking action, and positioning yourself as someone who can provide solutions. This mindset will not only help you stand out but also ensure you’re always prepared for life’s challenges.
2. Find YOUR Tribe
Your tribe is the community of people who trust you, support you, and believe in what you offer (NOT everyone on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, etc..) Start by looking at the people you already interact with—friends, family, classmates, teachers, or mentors. What are their needs? Are they looking for advice, help, or guidance in specific areas?
Your tribe begins with the people you already know. By identifying their challenges, you’ll uncover opportunities to help them and, in turn, build lasting relationships.
3. Align Needs with Your Passions
Once you understand the needs of those around you, ask yourself: Do these needs align with what I enjoy doing?
It’s important to focus on solving problems that matter to you. For example, if your friends need help with tutoring, and you love teaching, this could be a perfect match. If you’re passionate about technology and people are struggling with computer issues, that’s an opportunity to provide a valuable service.
Aligning their needs with your passions ensures your work is not only fulfilling but also sustainable. You’re more likely to stay motivated and deliver great results when you’re doing something you truly care about.
4. The Power of Personal Invitations
Imagine someone personally inviting you to join them in solving a problem or learning something new. It feels special, doesn’t it? That’s why personal invitations are so effective—they show genuine care and effort.
Once you’ve identified needs that align with your passions, personally invite people to learn how you can help them. Whether it’s a direct conversation, a handwritten note, or a customized message, taking the time to connect one-on-one builds trust and strengthens your relationships.
5. Build Your Tribe with Systems
As your tribe grows, you’ll need a way to stay connected and organized. One of the best ways to do this is by creating a system, such as an email list or messaging platform. These systems allow you to communicate with your tribe easily and efficiently, ensuring you can consistently provide value.
Start by collecting contact information—emails, phone numbers, or social media handles—from people in your tribe. Use these tools to:
- Share helpful tips, updates, or resources from your own website.
- Keep them informed about what you’re offering.
- Build relationships over time by checking in regularly.
This system is the foundation of your communication. It’s not just about staying in touch; it’s about nurturing trust, providing solutions, and creating opportunities to serve your community.
6. Provide Value, Build Relationships
Now that you have a system in place, use it to engage with your tribe. Share information that’s useful, ask questions, and genuinely show interest in their needs. For example:
- Send helpful articles or videos that align with their interests.
- Share personal stories about your journey and what you’ve learned.
- Ask for feedback or suggestions to better serve them.
By consistently providing value, you’ll establish trust and strengthen your relationships. This trust will become the foundation for making future offers—solutions that not only meet their needs but also help you grow your financial independence.
7. Create or Find Solutions
Once you’ve built trust and identified specific needs, it’s time to provide solutions. If you already have a skill or product that addresses their challenges, great! If not, explore ways to create one. Here are some examples:
- Tutoring or Mentoring: Offer to help classmates improve their grades or teach younger students a subject you’re good at.
- Digital Skills: If you’re tech-savvy, consider offering services like graphic design, website creation, or social media management.
- Crafts or Custom Products: If you’re creative, you could sell handmade items like jewelry, art, or personalized gifts.
- Workshops or Classes: Teach a skill you’re passionate about, like cooking, photography, or a foreign language.
Remember, the solution you provide should be tailored to the specific needs of your tribe. The more value you offer, the more likely they are to come back for more.
8. Get in Position to Harvest
Timing is everything. As you nurture your tribe and offer solutions, opportunities will arise naturally. Stay consistent, keep providing value, and be ready to act when the time is right.
Use your email list or messaging system to:
- Educate regarding problems or concerns affecting your tribe
- Providing solutions that can solve your tribe’s problems
- Share success stories or testimonials that these solutions provide
- Offer exclusive deals or limited-time opportunities that your tribe can take advantage of
When the timing is right and you continue to focus on providing relevant information, your tribe will trust you enough to invest in what you’re offering to solve their problems. Timing sometimes also refers to when the member of your tribe can afford to purchase your offer. This is usually related to being financial able at the moment or other priorities being more important at the moment.
Do note that if you get OUT of position, you could MISS opportunities. Seeds sprout when THEY’RE ready, but if you’re out of position when the time comes because you QUIT or GIVE UP on your vision, you will miss those opportunities. Things have a tendency to ripple over time and if you keep planting seeds, before you know it, the chickens will come home to roost and in a very good way!
9. Set Boundaries
Running your own tribe requires balance. Set clear boundaries around your time and energy. Create working hours and establish policies to ensure people respect your business. For example:
- Only respond to messages during specific hours.
- Set expectations for turnaround times and availability.
- Know when you’ve provided enough information whereby the tribe member needs to make a decision. Sometimes, you’ve shared all there is to know. A decision simply needs to be made and if one is indecisive, don’t waste your time trying to convince. Be willing to walk away.
Boundaries protect your well-being and allow you to deliver the best possible experience for your tribe and for yourself.
10. Mind Your Own Business
Not everything needs to be shared with everyone. Be mindful about what you post on social media or share publicly.
Unfortunately, not everyone will have your best interest in mind; this is not to encourage a spirit of pessimism but to encourage to have a discerning spirit to know if people’s intention for you is to truly move you forward. Obviously relationships are about win-win, but not all initiated relationships are always intended for that purpose. So it’s important to know and realize this. Asking questions for clarity can help, but you can also know through tendencies and behaviors that go towards a certain pattern where relationships are going. Intuition can be a guide as well. Always be willing to think neutrally and critically.
Protect your goals and vision by staying focused, discerning when and who to share your vision with, if you should share at all. Focus on serving YOUR tribe using your messaging system and everything else will take care of itself.
11. Give It Time
Building a thriving tribe takes time. With consistent effort, your list of supporters can grow into hundreds—or even thousands—of people who trust you and seek your solutions. Use your messaging system to continue nurturing these relationships, providing value, and making offers that align with their needs.
The key is patience. Stay committed to the process, and the results will follow.
Humorously, and my students know I like video games, I’m reminded of a part of a game called, “Infamous: Second Son” where a criminal actually gives a powerful lesson on patience. Here’s the clip. While I obviously don’t endorse criminal activity, I do endorse the idea of patience and being in position for opportunity.
Note: This video does have some vulgar. So viewer discretion is advised.
12. Enjoy the Journey
This isn’t just about achieving a goal—it’s about enjoying the process of learning, growing, and connecting with others. Celebrate every step, every milestone, and every success along the way.
Remember: By taking these steps, you’re not just building a tribe—you’re building a future that’s independent, fulfilling, and secure.
Bonus Step: Brand Yourself and Shine
A bonus step in building your tribe is to brand yourself. Now is your time to stand out and truly make a difference in your community. Share your unique voice, talents, and solutions confidently.
Closing Thoughts
Building your tribe is about creating a self-sufficient, purpose-driven community that uplifts you while allowing you to uplift others. By following these steps, you’ll position yourself for long-term success, independence, and fulfillment.
If this resonates with you, take the first step today. Start identifying your tribe, align their needs with your passions, and begin creating the future you deserve. Remember, the journey is just as rewarding as the destination.
