Why Learn Spanish with Mr. Brown?

Have you ever felt frustrated trying to learn Spanish through apps or traditional online courses? Maybe you’ve experienced lessons that drill vocabulary and grammar rules but leave you wondering how to actually speak or understand the language in real-life situations. I’ve seen this struggle many times before, and it’s exactly why I set out to create something different—something that truly equips students to not just learn Spanish but to use it confidently.

As someone who’s walked the path of language learning myself, I understand how challenging it can be. I want to share how my journey and experience can help you, and why my program, Self Taught Spanish, might just be the fresh approach you’ve been searching for.

A Little About Me

Hi, I’m Arnold Brown, Jr. I’ve been teaching for over 10 years, and I’m also a self-taught linguist. I’ve had the privilege of learning and speaking four languages fluently: Spanish, Portuguese, Mandarin Chinese, and of course, English. My love for languages started back in 2007, during a family trip to Orlando, Florida, when I was just a junior in high school. Surrounded by the Spanish-speaking community, I felt an unexplainable and sudden desire to learn Spanish.

What began as a curiosity quickly grew into a passion. By 2009, I was diving into self-studying not only Spanish but over 20 other languages during my college years. Over time, I became fluent in a few and continued to sharpen my skills, eventually becoming a certified Spanish teacher. Today, I’m continuing my study of  Russian, driven by my belief in the importance of being prepared, educated, and connected in an increasingly global world.

Why I Created Self Taught Spanish

When I first began learning languages, I noticed a pattern: most programs and resources gave you tools like vocabulary and grammar rules but didn’t show you how to put them together. It felt like being handed furniture for a house I didn’t know how to build. I created Self Taught Spanish to solve this problem. I wanted to offer a program that not only teaches the “what” of Spanish but also the “why” and “how.”

Here’s how my program is different:

1. It’s Self-Paced

Life is busy, and I understand that we all have different schedules. That’s why I designed the program to let you learn at your own speed, fitting Spanish into your life in a way that works for you.

2. It’s Comprehensive

I focus on giving you a strong foundation in pronunciation, grammar, and real-world communication. My goal is for you to feel comfortable speaking Spanish, not just memorizing it.

3. It’s Goal-Oriented

Whether you want to travel with ease, communicate with coworkers, or simply challenge yourself, I help you set clear goals and track your progress along the way.

To give you another reason why you should consider my Spanish program, watch this video where I not only share 5 Basic Spanish phrases that you can use with any native speakers, but also provide critical reasons why learning phrases is not how you’re going to make real progress. As an educator of over 10 years and self-taught linguist of over 15 years, I explain from experience exactly the thought process you want to have in order to achieve your goals objectively and effectively.

High School Student Testimonials

Teaching has been one of the greatest joys of my life, especially seeing high school students thrive. This brings me so much fulfillment. I’m humbled to share that during the fall semester of 2024, my students achieved an 81% passing rate—a testament to their hard work and dedication. If you’re interested, I’ve written more about their success in this blog post.

But beyond the numbers, what truly inspires me are the personal stories of other students who are adults. Here are a few testimonials from people who’ve been part of this journey:
