Is Mr. Brown’s Spanish Program for You? Part 1

Learning Spanish is a rewarding and transformative experience, but it’s not without its challenges. Before diving into any language-learning program, it’s essential to identify your why. A strong and clear reason for learning Spanish will keep you motivated, focused, and consistent on this exciting journey.

This blog marks the first in a series of four quizzes to help you determine if  Self Taught Spanish, my online self-paced program, is the right fit for you. As you read through this, I invite you to reflect deeply and write down your answers—you’ll need them later for the final exam that follows the 4 brief quizzes!

What’s Your Why?

Why do you want to learn Spanish? This may seem like a simple question, but your answer holds the key to unlocking your potential as a language learner. Here are a few examples of common motivations to inspire your reflection:

  • Connecting to Roots: Do you want to reconnect with your heritage or communicate with family members who speak Spanish?
  • Professional Needs: Are you a nurse, teacher, or professional in a field where Spanish fluency can enhance your career opportunities?
  • Travel and Culture: Do you dream of traveling to Spanish-speaking countries and engaging with locals in their native tongue?
  • Personal Growth: Are you driven by a desire to challenge yourself, expand your worldview, or gain a new skill?

Take a few moments to write down your reason—or reasons—for learning Spanish. Be specific and honest with yourself.

The Power of Reflection

Now that you’ve written down your why, let’s take it a step further. Ask yourself:

  • What would it mean to achieve this goal? Imagine the pride and joy of holding a conversation in Spanish, advancing in your career, or connecting with family and friends on a deeper level.
  • What would it mean to fall short of this goal? Consider the missed opportunities and unfulfilled dreams that could result from not pursuing your why.

By reflecting on both the positive outcomes of success and the potential cost of inaction, you’ll solidify your commitment to this journey.
