Language has the incredible ability to bridge cultures, create empathy, and foster understanding among people from diverse backgrounds. As an educator and self-taught linguist, I’ve dedicated my life to learning and teaching languages to inspire connection and promote peace. Fluent in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Mandarin Chinese, I continue to expand my linguistic horizons, currently learning Russian to better understand and contribute to our ever-evolving global society.
My Journey in Languages
My journey with languages began in 2007, during a family trip to Orlando, Florida, at the Islands of Adventure. Surrounded by the vibrant Spanish-speaking community, I remember feeling a sudden and divine desire to learn Spanish. That moment planted a seed of passion that would eventually shape my life.
By the time I finished my senior year in 2009, this interest had blossomed into a full-fledged pursuit. I began self-studying languages, dedicating myself to understanding the nuances and beauty of communication across cultures. Over the years, I’ve explored more than 20 languages, becoming fluent in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Mandarin Chinese, with a continued focus on mastering others.
Spanish was my gateway, opening doors to connect with diverse communities and cultures. Portuguese followed shortly after. Mandarin Chinese excited me with its complexity and offered insight into one of the world’s most influential cultures.
Here’s a video of me speaking Mandarin, Chinese:
Each language I’ve learned has been more than just an academic and self-fulfilling pursuit—it’s a doorway to new relationships, diverse perspectives, and a profound understanding of humanity. Learning languages has taught me not just vocabulary and grammar but also the value of seeing the world through different lenses.
Why Russian?
Now, I’m embarking on continuing my journey with learning Russian. I started learning this language back in fall of 2012. In fact, as part of my journey to learn Russian, I’ve practiced my writing skills in the language. Below is a snippet of my own writing in Russian, showcasing the progress I made in 3/16/2013:
In addition to learning the language, I’ve also experienced the kindness of Russian-speaking individuals. On December 13, 2013, I received a beautiful card from a Russian student that truly warmed my heart. The message inside, filled with festive wishes, reminded me of how language connects us on a deeper level. This thoughtful gesture inspires me to keep learning and fostering connections across cultures.
Here are images of the card for you to see:
In today’s world, where geopolitical events highlight the importance of cross-cultural understanding, I believe Russian is a language of immense relevance. As a global power, Russia plays a significant role in international relations, science, and literature. By learning Russian, I aim to deepen my understanding of the culture and contribute meaningfully to discussions about peace and mutual respect among nations.
This pursuit isn’t just academic. As an educator who champions empathy, sincerity, and bridging gaps through languages, I see learning Russian as another step toward living out these values. By equipping myself with more linguistic tools, I hope to inspire my students to see the world not as a place of division but as a tapestry of interconnected cultures waiting to be explored.
Languages as a Bridge
Each language I’ve learned has been a bridge to new relationships, new insights, and a deeper appreciation for the world’s diversity. Teaching languages has become more than a career—it’s a mission. Through language, we can foster peace and empathy, and break down barriers that separate us.
In my classes, I emphasize how languages can change lives. They don’t just open doors to careers but also open minds to the perspectives of others. By learning a new language, we embrace the unfamiliar and take a step closer to global citizenship.
What’s Next?
While I’m focused on learning Russian, I’m always curious about what languages others are drawn to. Do you dream of speaking French, Arabic, or Japanese? Or perhaps you want to reconnect with a heritage language?
